Subject Matter:

This meeting will present some of many of the current beneficial educational opportunities for those both wishing to enter the energy field as well as for professionals who want further their career &/or push their abilities to the next level. Government statistics indicate that energy management will be one of the fastest-growing career fields in the coming decade. This session will discuss how to acquire some of the tools.

We will have a panel of 4 of the more prolific educators in the energy and building operations field, who will detail the vast range of entry level, academic, professional development, and certification based courses and seminars. Some of the offerings to be covered include:

  • AEE seminars and certifications
  • M.S. in Energy Management degree program at NYIT
  • Classes offered by the Building Performance Lab and more broadly at CUNY
  • 1000 Green Supers and other adult education and workforce training offered by Local 32BJ’s Thomas Shortman Training Fund
  • Weatherization trainings and BPI related certifications

The speakers will also discuss where they see the industry going/growing as it relates to job opportunities and advancement. Plenty of time will be left for Q&A/discussion.

About Our Speakers

Fredric S. Goldner, C.E.M.
, is founding principal of Energy Management & Research Associates (EMRA). He is involved in a wide variety of projects from research to facility audits & use analyses to energy software development and program design. Mr. Goldner is also an adjunct professor at the Center for Energy Policy & Research at NYIT. Over the past quarter century Mr. Goldner has taught over 10,000 professionals and trade persons, and conducted presentations of symposium papers or seminars at over 30 major professional conferences. For the past 6 years he has been teaching AEE’s Real-time On-Line Seminars titled Energy Auditing Fundamentals, and Developing an Energy Management Master Plan. He has received numerous awards for his work. Most notable of these was in August 2007 when Mr. Goldner was inducted into the Energy Managers Hall of Fame, for his lifetime of achievement in promoting the practices and principles of Energy Management. Fred sits on numerous engineering and industry committees and boards. In 2007 he was asked to serve on the C.E.M. Board. Fred also served as International President of the AEE for 2003.

Asit Patel, is President of ANP Energy Corp which provides energy conservation services including energy audits, heating system optimization, and training. Mr. Patel is one of the most prolific and effective trainers in our industry. In the past year alone he has taught over 1,200 students in 7 different courses. His students include facility maintenance and operations staff, facility management and owners, and trade contractors, as well as other energy and engineering professionals. Not only does Asit deliver the training but he has served as the lead in the development of a number of new building and professional certifications in energy efficiency practices: Multifamily Building Energy Efficient Building Operators, and Hydronic Heating System Designers. Asit was on the Expert Panels that shaped these certifications and has been the one of the principal curricula and training materials developers of these week-long courses. Prior to forming ANP Energy Asit was Senior Energy Engineer and the Director of Training at the Association for Energy Affordability. Mr. Patel was honored with the New York AEE Chapter’s “Energy Professional Development” (EPD) of the Year Award for 2005 and the Region 1 EPD of the Year in 2008.

Michael Bobker, CEM, is Director of the Building Performance Lab (BPLab) at the CUNY Institute for Urban Systems. BPL is playing a key role in the city’s drive to become a global leader of high-performance building operations. BPLab’s multitrack approach combines applied research, curriculum development, and technology training with real estate industry outreach and collaboration. Michael has been a one of the leaders in the NY energy efficiency industry for over 25 years. Prior to helping form BPLab he was Director of Strategic Technology at the the Association for Energy Affordability, Senior Project Manager at Goldman Copeland Associates, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at BEI Energy Corporation, and an instructor at Apartment House Institute of NYC Technical College. Mr. Bobker was honored with the “Energy Engineer” of the Year award for 1999 from the New York Chapter of AEE, and the International “Energy Professional Development” of the Year 2004.

James Barry is the Manager of Program Development at The Local 32BJ Thomas Shortman Training Fund. The Thomas Shortman Training Fund offers training to 80,000 members of SEIU Local 32BJ working in the property services industry. The Training Fund is a joint labor-management organization, cosponsored by Local 32BJ and the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations. Every year thousands of building service workers attend classes at the Fund’s 20 locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and The District of Columbia. James has over 15 years of experience in adult education and workforce training. Since joining the Shortman Fund in 2003, he has worked to develop, fund and present high performance building education to Local 32BJ union members. To date, over 500 superintendents, handypersons, resident managers, and building operators have attended a variety of green building courses including “1000 Green Supers”, a 40-hour classroom and field training course to teach superintendents how to operate their buildings more efficiently.
