NYS Engineering Continuing Education Units anticipated available at the session.
District energy systems offer some significant advantages over the centralized production and delivery model, potentially improving the efficiency and reliability of delivered energy, particularly in dense urban developments and campus settings. When serving thermal and electrical loads across a variety of buildings, longer periods of coincident demand allow improved overall energy savings, greater displacement of stand-alone boilers, and other environmental and economic benefits. With advanced controls, new design, integration of renewables, greater feedback of load data, and new ownership models, these benefits can be even greater.
The AEE session will provide a detailed example of a very promising local project, NYU's upgrade and expansion of its cogeneration system from 8 MW to 13.4 MW. The session will also share experience from London and Woking, England, demonstrating advanced options implemented internationally. It follows a half-day workshop on district energy sponsored by CUNY and NYSERDA.
Our Speakers:
Martin Kushner, P.E., is leading NYU's energy expansion project. He will be joined by Michael Thornton, Associate Principal with Vanderweil Engineers, and Michael Byrnes, P.E., Executive Vice President SourceOne, who are also actively involved with engineering and developing the project.
Stephen Hammer, PhD directs the Urban Energy Project at Columbia University's Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy (CEMTPP) and is the co-founder and Administrator of the Urban Climate Change Research Network. He teaches the CEMTPP course on Urban Energy Systems and Policy and oversees the Urban Energy workshop at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).
