Topic: Multifamily Housing Energy Efficiency & Carbon Reduction - A Working Group Discussion

Date Location Time Panelists

Meeting Details

Reminders: Sandwiches, soda, networking 5:30-6:00. $15 for chapter members, $20 for non-members

At a time when energy efficiency makes ever-increasing sense, the Mayor's PlaNYC2030 has identified multifamily housing as a key target sector for pursuing carbon reduction goals. In fact, the Mayor's Office challenged our chapter to provide leadership in creating a consensus on what steps should be taken to open the door for dramatic progress in multifamily properties. This is certainly no new topic for most of us but it is now being recognized with increasing urgency.

Our September meeting will provide a first effort at developing guidance for multifamily decision-makers. A draft outline for such a guidance document is provided below. We expect discussion on topics such as:

  • What might a building's "energy efficiency roadmap" look like?
  • What steps and measures with which to start?
  • What are realistic targets? What balance between low-tech steps and high-tech capital measures?
  • What are typical barriers and how to get past them
  • How to integrate energy efficiency into other projects and improved building comfort
  • How a building might use energy efficiency to help finance its capital plan

The meeting will also provide an opportunity for our technical community to hear from the client community their perceptions of what is needed for them to move ahead. We hope that this is a discussion that will be part of our meetings throughout this year's program. Please plan on joining us.

Participants
As a "working group" meeting, the session will emphasis discussion rather than presentations. We will have participants from many of the major organizations working in this area, including NYSERDA, AEA, CEC, NYARM, NY Council of Cooperatives and Condominiums, USGBC NYC Chapter, Superintendents Technical Association and others. We hope YOU will join us in this discussion and this important process!
