September 2009 Meeting Announcement
Topic: Opportunities In Recent Energy Price Trends for Electricity and Natural Gas
|
Meeting Details
Entry Fee: $20 for chapter members, $25 for non-members
Subject Matter:
"Power & Gas Pricing: Are We Seeing... A 'Perfect Calm'?" describes how, in the last year, power and natural gas pricing spiked and crashed - and how energy users may take advantage of the situation. Lindsay Audin of Energywiz Inc., will walk us through wholesale gas and power pricing and how it turns into the retail energy prices we pay. He'll cover some of the causes of the spike and reasons why gas and power pricing have remained low - and may drop even further. He concludes with ways that energy users may profit from this rare opportunity.
"Is RTP The Right Rate For PV?" reviews findings of a recent study performed by Bright Power. Real time pricing (RTP) tends to peak when it's hot and sunny, just when PV panels are outputting their maximum power. BP was asked if switching buildings in NYC that had (or might install) PV systems would be better off if they bought their power under RTP. Some of their findings may surprise you. Jeff Perlman, president of BP, and Andy McNamara, its chief energy engineer, will guide us through their results and recommendations.
Speakers:
Lindsay Audin (CEM, CEP, IES, LEED-AP) is the President of Energywiz, Inc., an energy consulting firm serving large energy users, agencies, suppliers, and consultants. His 35 years in the energy services industryinclude 12 years with private engineering and energy consulting firms in New York City and 8 years as energy manager for Columbia University, prior to founding Energywiz in 1996. Among his many energy-related awards are: Energy Manager of the Year (named so by 3 national organizations), International Energy Manager of the Year, and membership in AEE's Energy Manager's Hall of Fame. He has founded or chaired several energy organizations, and served on many energy-related professional boards and committees, including several related to national standards. Through AEE, he also teaches seminars in load profiling and power procurement. Since 1991, Audin has had columns on energy issues in several national magazines, and is presently a contributing editor to Building Operating Management magazine.
Jeffrey Perlman, CEM, LEED AP, is the President and Founder of Bright Power. BP consults to Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and others to analyze solar energy and green buildings technologies, markets, opportunities, and costs versus benefits. Prior to founding the company, he worked as an independent consultant with, among others, Greg Kats at Capital E with whom he co-authored "The Costs and Financial Benefits of Green Buildings," a ground-breaking report that used economic cost/benefit analysis to show that building healthy, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible buildings makes economic sense. Mr. Perlman is a LEED-accredited green building professional, a CEM and a BPI Multifamily Building Analyst. He has a degree in Applied Physics from Yale University.
Andrew McNamara CEM, LEED AP, is a Senior Consultant and Vice President of New Construction & Renewables with Bright Power. His daily tasks include working with facility design teams and owners, simulating buildings utilizing eQUEST and TREAT software and solar PV systems using TRNSYS. Andrew also writes consulting reports and technical publications to NYSERDA and various professional organizations. He is the Founder and President of the New York Chapter of the International Building Performance and Simulation Association and co-founder of the University of Rochester Alumni for Social Responsibility. Andrew is also a member of AEE-NY, USGBC-NY, and ASHRAE. He is a CEM and LEED AP. Andrew has a dual degree with a BA in Physics and a BS in Optical Engineering from the University of Rochester.
