NYC Local Law 97 set GHG emissions limits for buildings greater than 25,000 square feet.

Theo Breitenstein of EMACX Systems will provide a brief overview of the law and how using carbon footprint management you can predict what your potential GHG emissions will be to better inform you of probable fines for the building. He will also present a technology that will help reduce GHG emissions by kilowatt/hour harvesting.

Rich Costello of Acela Energy Group will discuss the current use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) with assisting existing Building’s HVAC Control Systems to substantially reduce energy consumption.  Most control systems in use today are set to instantly compensate and react for each temperature variation that occurs in a building, but these systems often work against the buildings natural thermal inertia, which can lead to the overlapping and waste of both cooling and heating capacity.

Theo Breitenstein, MBA, CEM, CDSM, CSDP, a native of Switzerland, is President and Founder of EMACX Systems, Inc. For his outstanding work Theo was honored with the “Energy Engineer of the Year” award for 2009” from the AEE NY Chapter and in 2010 the AEE regional award. 2017 he received the highest honor with the AEE “International Energy Engineer of the Year” award.

Mr. Breitenstein holds an Electrical Engineering Degree, BSEE, from the University of Lucerne, Switzerland and a MBA from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, a top European business school.

Richard J. Costello, PE, MSEM, BSME, CEM, is the President of Acela Energy Group, an energy consulting group specializing in energy procurement, load management, as well as, energy conservation training, auditing, and on-site wind & geothermal generation projects. Rich has extensive experience in the fields of load management, utility services, energy conservation, as well as power, natural gas, and tariff related negotiations and agreements.

Rich is a registered professional engineer and was previously the Power Supply Manager for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, as well as a Senior Engineer in the Load Management Department of Boston Edison (Eversource). He holds a M.S. in Engineering Management from Western New England College and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University.  Mr. Costello also conducts Certification Programs nationwide for the Association of Energy Engineers.  Rich was the National President of the Association for the Year 2000 and received the 2003 Energy Professional of the Year Award from the organization.  In 2006, Richard was inducted into the Energy Managers Hall of Fame.
