The success of New York's ambitious clean energy goals (70% renewable electricity by 2030, 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040) heavily depends on addressing transmission and reliability challenges through coordinated state and utility action.
This month we explore the recent technology and regulatory advancements and challenges impacting development of local large-scale renewables. Critical areas include major transmission projects under development, integration with offshore wind development, relief of congestion points, and interconnection capacity at local substations. Going forward we can expect continued emphasis on regional coordination, transmission expansion, deployment of energy storage, enhanced distribution system planning, increased attention to local grid reliability (designing the system of the future for growth and resilience), and evolution of NYISO market rules.
